“What is ‘stress’ and who discovered it scientifically?”
“Stress is the nonspecific response of the body to any demand, whether it is caused by, or results in, pleasant or unpleasant conditions.” - Dr Hans Selye
The late Dr. Hans Selye was without question one of the great pioneers of medicine and his gifts to humanity were his research and findings into the realities of stress. He served as professor and Director of the Institute of Experimental Medicine and Surgery at the University of Montreal for many years. His famous and revolutionary concept of stress opened countless avenues of treatment through the discovery that hormones participate in the development of many degenerative diseases, including coronary thrombosis, brain haemorrhage, hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure and kidney failure, arthritis, peptic ulcers and even cancer.
Stress is not a reaction to a specific thing.
The stress response can be produced by virtually any cause. Stress is Our Inner Response to circumstances that challenge us to adapt to change.
Stressors are not exclusively physical in nature. Emotions, e.g., shame, hate, guilt, anger, disgust, sadness, loss, betrayal, and fear, also call forth the changes characteristic of the stress syndrome.
If we think of stress as external, then to reduce stress we must change the world, which is often not really possible. However, if we realize stress is our reaction to circumstances and events in our life, then reducing stress is possible.
Healthy lifestyle choices can help make us stronger and more resilient so that life‘s challenges are not as stressful. Healthy habits help with stress prevention.
Greater understanding of some of life’s most challenging situations, often considered the most immediate causes of stress, can reduce unnecessary stress. Many natural, easily preformed stress relief methods can help us restore a sense of ease, balance and harmony in our lives.
